The Island

The Guardian

The Times

Time Out

John and Winston are cellmates.

One may soon be released; one serves a life sentence, but for now they are both prisoners. As they prepare to perform Antigone for the rest of the prison, the two friends begin to see themselves in the characters, exposing the tensions in their friendship and the oppression around them.

Created by Athol Fugard, John Kani and Winston Ntshona during the apartheid era, The Island is inspired by true stories from South Africa’s notorious Robben Island, the prison Nelson Mandela was held in for 27 years.

Directed by Alex Brown, the winner of the JMK Award 2013.
