Director/Designer Workshop with Jennifer Tang and Moi Tran

Young vic

Deadline:

Director/Designer Workshop with Jennifer Tang and Moi Tran

Wednesday 2, 16, 30 September 2020

7.00pm – 9.15pm

In this series of three workshops, director Jennifer Tang and artist/designer Moi Tran will explore the director/designer relationship, examine how to build a shared language for the visual world of a production and unpack the initial design process.

Open to early career directors and designers, the workshops will walk through the design process from preparing for your first meeting with your director/designer, sharing of early ideas and concepts, compiling research boards, making storyboards, and first drawing of a set design.

Each participant will be paired with a peer director/designer counterpart. As a group, all exploring the same set play, Jennifer and Moi will guide participants through the early stages of their design process for this play. Each director/designer pair will then have the opportunity to develop their own design concept, working with the Clare Theatre at the Young Vic.

Each partnership will have the opportunity to share back their ideas for production and their findings on their individual and shared process in the final week.

The sessions are as follows:

Week 1: Wednesday 2 September

Reading a play, translating theme to concept, meeting your partner, sharing ideas, how to research and storyboard

Week 2: Wednesday 16 September

Translating early ideas into design reality, artistic questions and considerations, how the director can support the designer at this stage of the process.

Week 3: Wednesday 30 September

Sharing of production ideas and drawings from each partnership (five-minute sharing, with five-minute discussion per pair with Jennifer and Moi about ideas and process).  General Q&A about the process and the artistic relationship, and a chance to network and share contacts

It is hoped that participants are able to work in their pairs outside of the set workshop sessions to develop ideas through discussion and to complete some set tasks. Ideally this would be up to five hours between each session – across each two-week period. To get the full benefit of the sessions you should be able to attend all three dates.
