5:00 PM - 11:00 PM
Maria Studio, Young Vic
Encuentros: LATAM Creators Takeover at the Young Vic is an event uniting creators from the LATAM community for a day of networking, collaboration, and celebration. Through free workshops, engaging panel discussions, and more, this event aims to provide a platform for LATAM artists to share their work, discuss their aspirations, and explore the challenges and successes within the industry.
As part of this gathering, 5 LATAM artists have been offered R&D space at the Young Vic. The event will be an opportunity for the artists to reflect on the work they are creating and discuss what they achieved or explored in their R&Ds with fellow creatives.
Workshop offers (5:00 PM - 7:00 PM)
Translation group with William Gregory
Join translator William Gregory (Royal Court, Gate, Southwark Playhouse, Out of the Wings) to explore the choices translators make and how they impact a play’s journey across borders of language and culture. In this two-part workshop we will compare different approaches to theatre translation using existing texts, and give space for participants working on translations to ask questions about their own work. No experience of translation is needed to join in this workshop and theatre practitioners of all specialisms are welcome to take part. We will work with examples from Spanish, but no knowledge of Spanish is required to participate.
About the facilitator
William Gregory began translating plays in 2003, when he found Julio Escalada’s Springtime on a shelf at the Instituto Cervantes, translated it, and then staged a sold-out run at the Finborough Theatre in London. Since that blisteringly hot London August, he has translated over 200 plays, many of them new works, for clients including the Royal Court Theatre, the BBC and the Gate, and for productions at the Old Vic and the Edinburgh International and Fringe Festivals. His translations of drama have been performed in the UK, US, Ireland, Australia, India, Sri Lanka, Germany and Austria, and several have been published. He has also worked in other genres such as non-fiction, poetry, and novels.
Nos encontramos with Andrea Ling
A practical workshop exploring community collectivism, collaboration and approaches to creating new ideas and concepts.
This workshop will explore questions like:
- What does it mean to be a LATAM artist in the UK? The expectations, responsibility and identity that the word conjures will be explored.
- What resources do we have as a community and what do we need to thrive?
- How can we address barriers and begin to think of solutions?
- What are the practical approaches to creating new performance ideas in a interdisciplinary approach?
*Interdisciplinary - ‘Inter’ meaning between things and mediums. Essentially, a practice that involves two or more approaches or skillsets.

We will also be joined by LatinX Actors UK – LATAM arts UK, who will talk about their new platform and writer residencies.
There will be food, drinks and music. This will be a space for us to get together, think about collaboration and celebrate.
How do I join?
If you’re interested in participating, please fill in the form linked at the top of this page. There will be an option for you to select either one of the workshops.

There are 20 places available on the Translation working group, and an additional 30 for Nos encontramos. These will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
If you have access requirements, the form will allow you to submit an access rider so that we can get the necessary provisions in place for you before the day. You can submit your own, or download one of our templates here to use.
The deadline to express interest is 10:00 AM on Friday 22 September 2023. We will aim to get in touch with everyone who has expressed interest by Monday 25 September 2023. Please aim to express interest early if you need adjustments put in place during the event.

They have been planned according to the expected number of participants, and time has been given to make these opportunities available.
