Open Session: Resilience and Artistic Freedom

In this session Chilean director María José Andrade will explore the relation between Resilience and Artistic Freedom in conversation with Gate Theatre’s Artistic Director Ellen McDougall and Associate Designer Rosie Elnile.

 

During the session, the guest speakers will reflect on personal experiences and share live provocations/manifestos specially made as a response to the invitation. On the second half, they will open the discussion so any member of the industry who wants to join the session will be welcome to comment and ask questions.

María José Andrade is a Chilean theatre director and creative producer. Her last -Pre-COVID 19- work was as assistant director to Ellen McDougall at Faces in the Crowd, at the Gate Theatre, in January 2020. Director credits include La Jana (Roundhouse, 2019), Last Rehearsal (The Warren, Brighton Fringe, 2019) Last Rehearsal a Re-version (Theatre Deli, 2019), Kif Kif  (New Rives Studios, 2017) and 1001 KM  (Saatchi Gallery, Low tech Lab, 2016).     

      

Ellen McDougall is Artistic Director at the Gate Theatre. Previous credits at the Gate include – Dear Elizabeth (2019), Effigies of Wickedness (2018), The Unknown Island (2017) and Idomeneus (2014). Other credits include Our Town (Regents Open Air) and The Wolves (Stratford East); Othello (Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at the Globe); the Lyric’s annual pantomime – Aladdin (2016) and Cinderella (2015); The Rolling Stone (Orange Tree Theatre and Manchester Royal Exchange); The Remains of Maisie Duggan (Abbey Theatre, Dublin); The Glass Menagerie (Headlong); Anna Karenina (Manchester Royal Exchange); Henry the Fifth (Unicorn Theatre); Glitterland (Secret Theatre/Lyric Hammersmith) and Ivan and the Dogs (Actors Touring Company/Soho Theatre) – nominated for an Olivier Award.

 

Rosie Elnile is a performance designer. Credits include: The Ridiculous Darkness, Unknown Island and The Convert (Gate Theatre). Further credits: The Wolves (Theatre Royal Stratford East); The Mysteries (Manchester Royal Exchange); Three Sisters (Manchester Royal Exchange/Yard Theatre); Abandon (Lyric Hammersmith); Returning to Haifa (Finborough); Goats, Prime Time (Royal Court); BIG GUNS (Yard Theatre). Awards include: Stage Debut Award for Best Designer.
