Gemma May Maddock

Director

Known as Gem, she/her. I am a multidisciplinary creative and practitioner by trade, but am perhaps best described by both colleagues and students as a hardworking Aussie artist with fiery red hair and a wild passion for storytelling. I’m a born and bred farm girl from remote Australia; Mukinbudin, specifically.. I promise it exists!

Somehow I ended up as a Director and Voice Coach in the UK, working in both conservatoire training, fringe works and West End/touring theatre. London is now my beloved, unexpected home for life, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

My passion and strengths lie in exploring complex or stylised texts, asking “how can this be translated, adapted or transformed in today’s world and still be felt as authentic to both actor and audience alike?”

I love mixing physical theatre or heightened movement with text to explore subtext, narrative and character journey. Music and creative play are huge contributors to my process and these elements help to build an incredibly collaborative ethos in my rehearsal rooms.

I’m the co-founder of non-profit theatre company The Kindling Collective with fellow artist Mel Gleeson; together we make work that celebrates ensemble-led stories and collaborative devising.

I understand the difference in working in education and within professional industry, having done both for many years. I am confident that I can tread both of those boards, just as I am comfortable holding my own in a red dusty sheep yard, a rehearsal room or a red carpet!
