Ioana Curelea

Designer

Ioana (she/her) was born during a cold, January night in Bucharest, Romania. Having studied Fine Art for 10 years she decided it’s time for a change and moved West to further her studies. Alas! Her foundation degree revealed to her uncharted territory: the Theatre. From then onwards the narrative is pretty self-explanatory as Ioana did a BA (Hons) in Theatre Design and an MA in the same subject and is currently working as a freelance set and costume designer in London.

Ioana occasionally still flirts with Fine Art through different mediums as a tool for the development of her scenic designs. Ioana is interested in all types of performance, however from a very early age she developed an obsessive fascination with Radical Art and Performance. She considers these to be a vehicle for addressing the divides in contemporary society, often highlighting normative societal structures and breaking down each layer to reveal the ‘truth’ of the socio-political hierarchy. Ioana likes producing harrowing and challenging performances that often comment on the absurdity of convention and represent a rejection of orthodox theatre making.
