Afton has been involved in theatre since they were a teenager, when they joined their local youth theatre company. They went on to study BA Acting at the University for the Creative Arts, which they graduated from in 2021 with 2:1. During their time at university, Afton began teaching youth theatre and discovered their love of directing. They set up her own company, Phenix Youth Theatre 2019 and has directed 3 plays there, including 2 as part of National Theatre Connections youth theatre festival. They also assistant directed 2 productions at university alongside their studies in acting.
