Teunkie Van Der Sluijs

Director Translator Adapter Dramaturge

I am a theatre director with 15+ years experience directing main house, mid-scale and studio work in both the UK and Europe, for (inter)national tours and at regional venues. My work as translator and adapter for the stage has been performed by the National Theatre of the Netherlands, off-Broadway, in commercial tours and at fringe festivals across Europe. I work as Head of Artistic Development at the Young Vic, looking after new work development, dramaturgy, and satellite programming. I have worked as tutor and visiting director at a range of drama schools and universities in the UK. Pronouns: he/him.

Recent directing includes the Netherlands premiere productions of A RAISIN IN THE SUN, BENEATHA'S PLACE and CLYBOURNE PARK at Internationaal Theater Amsterdam for associate company Well Made Productions, awarded the 2017 Amsterdam Award for the Arts. Other directing: THE MOUNTAINTOP (De Meervaart Amsterdam, Netherlands tour), WOMEN LAUGHING (Off West End nomination Best Director), HATE (Barbican, finalist Oxford Samuel Beckett Theatre Trust Award), WINTER (Orange Tree Theatre), LUNGS (Netherlands tour), WATERDRAGERS (Het Zuidelijk Toneel, Netherlands tour) and YASSER (Arcola London, Chopin Theater Chicago, National Theatre of the Netherlands, Assembly Rooms Edinburgh). I worked with HOME Manchester as Director (Literary & International) from 2017-2019, and was Resident Director for global entertainment company Imagine Nation at Theater Amsterdam from 2014-2016, working on ANNE: THE DIARIES OF ANNE FRANK ON STAGE, SKY and the development of the HUNGER GAMES stage production. I am a former staff director at the National Theatre and was a finalist for the Quercus Award, the Leverhulme Bursary for Emerging Theatre Directors, the Young Angels Theatremakers Award and the Arches Award.

Training

I trained on the BA Theatre Directing programme at Rose Bruford College, studied Script Development at the National Film and Television School, and hold an MA in Theatre Studies from the University of Amsterdam. I also studied filmmaking at the London Film Academy and took part in workshops by Katie Mitchell, Ian Rickson, Mike Alfreds, John Wright et.al. I was Trainee Director at the Orange Tree Theatre in 2010-2011.
