Alex McCarthy

Theatre maker Director Playwright

He // Him

Apologies for the lack of social links, I'm not on social media for mental health reasons.

I'm a published playwright, and theatremaker. Having worked widely in South African theatre, I know work with new text based work primarily as director & dramaturg. My ideal process forms the company into a playwrighting organism where every creative and performer is responsible for enhancing the effectiveness of the text and performance, chiselling out the best version of the experience that it could be. Collaboration and holding things lightly are my guiding stars. My approach has so far worked with drama, comedy and one person drag horror shows.

I graduated from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama with an MA In Writing for Stage and Broadcast Media in 2019. Aside from projects in South Africa pre-pandemic, I recently directed Grey Widow at a number of London venues including: The Vaults, The Other Palace Studio and The Kings Head Theatre. I am Associate Producer of Crunchy Leaf Productions.
