Nathaniel Brimmer-Beller

Nathaniel Brimmer-Beller is a playwright, actor, and director originally from Washington, DC, now living in the United Kingdom. He has directed more than thirty theatrical productions, and has written fifteen plays, including six acclaimed premieres at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

His play Blood Red Apples and Deep Gold Honey was nominated for the George Devine Award for Most Promising Playwright in 2022. This philosophical comedy-drama explored his mixed-race and Jewish heritage, and was developed through the Almeida Theatre’s Anthem project.

His Edinburgh Fringe plays have transferred to London on multiple occasions - most notably his darkly comedic political satire Chagos 1971 in 2019, and his fast-paced Hollywood awards-industry satire Press in 2021 and 2022, which has returned to London stages four times since. Nathaniel portrayed that play’s lead character David Fring in all of these productions. In 2023, he developed David’s personality into a monologue performance which earned him a Bursary Prize at the writer-performer competition Screenshot, organized by South of the River Pictures and SISTER Global. After the competition, panel judge Olivia Colman called Nathaniel “a f**king great actor.” This he will not soon forget.

Also in 2023, he brought In Everglade Studio to the Edinburgh Fringe for a month-long run, where the play was longlisted for the BBC Writersroom Popcorn Award for Best New Writing.

Other recent works written by Nathaniel include 1960s-fashion-industry mystery Nines and satire of the contemporary theatre industry The Kindness of Strangers, both of which enjoyed successful runs at the Canal Café Theatre. The Kindness of Strangers, originally developed as a double-bill with Press, also transferred to VAULT Festival in 2023.

Nathaniel also wrote, directed and edited the short film Evening Plans, which was nominated in the New Visions category of the Edinburgh Film Festival in 2021. He also wrote the radio play Turner & Turner, and acclaimed Edinburgh Fringe plays Mack The Knife, Technicolor, and Fear of Roses.

Nathaniel studied International Relations at the University of Edinburgh and received an MA with Distinction in Film Studies from King’s College London.

Nathaniel continues to write plays, films, and more, and looks forward to bringing works such as The Net Under Makeout Bridge, London Fog, and The Hampstead Cage to life in the near future.
