Nick Bond (he/him) is a freelance director and performer, who recently concluded studying an MA in Theatre Directing at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts. He is the Young Associate Board Director for Buxton International Festival for 2021-2023.
From 2017-2020, he studied a Bachelors Degree in Music and Drama at the University of Manchester, for which he obtained a first class honours, and a commendation of excellence for the Meera Syal Award for Outstanding Practical Work for his Directing project, 'The Lieutenant of Inishmore' by Martin McDonagh.
He recently studied the MA Theatre Directing course at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, training under Peter James. Visiting tutors include Mark Ravenhill, Anna Healey, Mark Bell, Alice Fitzgerald, Richard Cant, Lilac Yosiphon, Georgie Staight, and Will Holyhead.
He directed his first full musical in 2019, with a production of 'Seussical' for the University of Manchester Musical Theatre Society. The production was hailed as a 'triumph', and 'brilliantly bold and bonkers' by reviewers from the National Operatic and Dramatic Association, and was nominated for nine regional awards including Best Musical.
In July 2021, Nick made his professional directing debut, directing Jonathan Dove and Alasdair Middleton's 'The Enchanted Pig' as part of Buxton International Festival. The production marked the first project in the 'Platform 3' initiative, and the festival's first production to be created and performed entirely by young artists. It received positive critical responses including a 4-star review from George Hall of The Stage, who labelled the production as 'an outstanding wealth of youthful talent'. Following the success of the performances, Nick was appointed as the Young Associate Board Director for Buxton International Festival. This two year position is designed to give voice to young opera creatives on a higher organisational level.
In spring 2021, Nick worked as an Administrative Assistant on the Coventry Moves project for Coventry UK City of Culture. He worked closely with Stage Management and the Community Engagement and Participation Manager to coordinate the involvement of community participants in the event.
Nick has a passion for creating accessible theatre that challenges the distinctions between opera, musical theatre and other forms of music drama.
