Creating a Sensory Language for Your Production

Reading and thinking about plays can become quite cerebral, and academic. This practical workshop led by director Jennifer Tang will give directors tools and exercises to help you talk about the play in a more tangible way, translating intellectual thoughts into more sensory ideas for a production.
By the end of the workshop, you will have found some concrete ideas and a new kind of language for a play of your choice. This language can be helpful for starting a design process, shaping conversations for a future pitch or to share ideas with your creative collaborators.
Directors will be asked to undertake structured exercises as part of the workshop. There will be opportunities for individual working, as well as for work in smaller groups. You will need to choose a play to work on during the workshop. It should be something you know well - maybe something you are due to direct or are keen to direct in the future. If you would like to develop your ideas for a devised show, you need to have a clear plan of the concept or narrative.

Jennifer Tang is the next Young Vic Genesis Fellow/Associate Director. She is an award-winning UK and International theatre director, specialising in new writing and fusing theatre with music. She has worked with buildings and organisations including The Royal Exchange, The Young Vic, The Gate, Hampstead Theatre, The Royal Opera House and The Royal Shakespeare Company. Her practice also spans devised work and opera, and she has extensive experience of working with communities and young people.
