Working in Opera

This workshop led by Matthew Monaghan will cover a broad overview of the process of directing an opera. It will be interesting for those wanting to know more about working in opera.
The workshop will cover;
- An introduction to the art-form. A brief discussion on how opera is produced both nationally and internationally.
- A broad exploration of the process of directing an opera, whilst also looking at different styles and approaches. This will include insight into working with music, directing opera in conventional and non-conventional theatre spaces, directing singers, working with a chorus, and tech.
- Assistant directing
It would be useful for those taking part to watch these productions before the session but is not essential:

This is a peer-led project initiated and facilitated by Matthew Monaghan.
Matthew Monaghan is a theatre and opera director. He has worked as a director and assistant director with companies and organisations including English National Opera, the Royal College of Music, BBC Singers, Live Theatre, Northern Stage, RADA, the Royal Opera, Opera North, and Garsington Opera. He was a finalist in the European Opera Directing Prize Competition in 2016. He trained at RADA on the MA in Theatre Directing.
