Adaptation
Tuesday 30th June
2.00pm – 4.00pm
Writer, Lulu Raczka will be running a workshop about adapting older, classic plays or novels for the contemporary stage. Lulu has worked on adaptations of Antigone by Sophocles, Iphigenia at Aulis by Euripides, Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift and Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen.
The workshop will explore different motivations for adaptation, whether that is a desire to update the plays setting to the contemporary world, centring different voices within it, changing the form, or challenging the message. The workshop will discuss how we can use these classic stories to tell new ones, challenge orthodoxies, and connect to the world today.
There will be discussions of adaptations from writers such as Timberlake Wertenbaker, Brandon Jacobs-Jenkins and Tim Crouch and companies like RashDash, Dead Centre and Forced Entertainment. You do not need to have seen, or read any of their plays, but their work will be described and used in discussion.
The workshop will be practical. Each participant should bring a play they wish to adapt, and throughout the workshop they will develop different ideas for how to adapt it. There will be opportunity to share work but only if you are comfortable doing so.
If you would like to attend this discussion then please sign up here so we can send you the Zoom details in advance of the session.
