Visual Storytelling for Stage and Screen
Thursday 17, 24 September and 1, 8 October
4.30pm – 6.00pm
When directing for the stage or the screen, when working with designers, and in thinking through lighting or costume choices, directors/theatre makers are constantly making decisions about images – whether consciously or not. In order to effectively tell stories that carry meaning and message for an audience, artists need to understand the grammar of imagery and the visual storytelling components they have at their disposal. How can directors and theatre makers communicate ideas through images? How can story structure be translated into visual structure?
This series of four 90-minute workshops from Young Vic Creative Associate Teunkie Van Der Sluijs is aimed at practitioners wanting to further their understanding of storytelling through image. While it is focussing mainly on understanding and creating work for the stage, it will also look at screen stories through comparison and as illustration, as well as examine visual grammar particular to film and TV. Alongside a wide range of examples drawn from music videos to photography, and from painting to (silent) cinema, the workshops will pay particular attention to contemporary European theatre design.
Week 1 Visual dramaturgy: understanding visual grammar, interpreting plays as images, and learning visual storytelling from silent cinema
Week 2 Elements of visual storytelling: space and shape
Week 3 Elements of visual storytelling: colour
Week 4 Elements of visual storytelling: movement and rhythm
